                                              Abstract

The essay starts from the fact that Taiwan is already a democratic society.
With this fact in mind, the author adopts John Dewey’s theory of democracy in
trying to argue that Taiwan is a much more desirable society than mainland China

and Singapore among Chinese communities. In the middle of this essay, the author
explicates, along the line of John Dewey once again, the reasons why a democratic
society would pay special attention to formal education. At the end of the essay, the
author makes some concrete suggestions concerning how to conduct democratic

education in Taiwan’s school. The author maintains that to keep education from the
dominant idea of preparing for future is an essential step of promoting democratic
education. It is also suggested that teacher union plays a key role in cultivating
democratic culture is school. In the conclusion, the author claims the Dewey’s

theory of democracy and education is still relevant for Taiwan’s attempt to become
              a mature democracy.

                   我們很難說台灣不是一個民主社會,以台灣為主體的中華民國已
              被認定是一個新興的民主國家(emergent democracy)。在台灣的中華
              民國能夠走到這一步,說起來是華人國家當中的異數。
